Chances are you probably have not heard of BGP Anycast. What is it you ask? Anycast is a routing and addressing policy to achieve the most efficient path between a single source and several geographically dispersed targets. Anycast allows multiple, identical, global DNS servers using the same IP address with handling routing of the request to the closest location.

This means that when an internet user looks up your domain name, they use the server nearest to their geographic location.

Anycast Map

Our DNS servers are located in various geographic locations, including the US, Europe, Asia and 2 locally in Australia. The point of this is so that the users located within US, Europe and Asia will be automatically resolving hostnames using those servers closest to them. It also means that an issue effecting a server in the US can have it’s traffic rerouted to Asia.

Netregistry utilise Anycast on all our cloud DNS servers which is included with cloud hosting and domain manager services.

Benefits

Reduces DNS query latency

This means that potential clients visiting your website will experience reduced load times due to faster DNS resolution from overseas visitors. Not only is your clients usability experience enhanced, it is also beneficial for search engine optimisation as site speed is an important component in search engine rankings.

Enables DNS to be more reliable / Increases redundancy

Anycast DNS service has failover built in, if a node is offline is traffic is re-routed to the next closest location with the end user unaffected.

Netregistry currently offers Anycast DNS as a free value add on to all our domains under management. If you have any questions or enquiries about how Anycast works, please feel free to call us on 1300 638 734.
