Company culture: Keeping your team happy

Creating an open, friendly and lively company culture is one of the best ways to improve your business. A happy team is a hard-working one, so it’s essential that you look for ways to foster an inclusive and motivational culture within your workplace. Get started with a few of our top tips for keeping your team happy.

Introduce a monthly social event

Give your team a chance to get to know one another outside the confines of the office by scheduling regular social events. This get-together should feel like a reward, not an extension of working hours, so pick a venue or activity your team will enjoy (do a survey or ask for opinions if you’re unsure). If possible, contribute towards the cost with company funds.

Maintain great communication

The best way to ensure your team is on the same page is to make it easy to exchange information. To do this, you need to have processes in place that allow information from the top to trickle down quickly and appropriately. This means employees won’t feel left in the dark about big decisions or changes that might affect them.

It also means introducing an open-door policy that will allow all members of staff to have their say and feel as though they can give feedback on problems or issues.

Recognise a good job when you see one

An excellent way to promote happiness in individuals is to make sure you recognise and acknowledge a job well done. Whether it’s a whole department meeting its targets or one person excelling in their role, taking the time to say thank you and point out the achievement can have a very beneficial effect.

A bonus or a special treat for the team can be a good way of marking a particular success, but remember that a simple thank you can often mean just as much to someone going above and beyond the call of duty.

Brainstorm your company’s ethos

Everyone wants to feel as though they are a valuable member of the team, and everyone also has a vested interest in making sure the business they work for is heading in the right direction. Make a point of frequently holding brainstorming sessions for the entire workforce. This will allow for an open exchange of ideas and the possibility of reshaping the company’s ethos to suit changing needs.
