Netregistry’s Online Marketing Guru, Sam Shetty, and I recently sat down to chat about building a website and optimising it for search engines. This week I’m sharing with you Sam’s tips on improving your SEO and how our online marketing team can help you get the most out of your little corner of the world wide web.

1. Why do I need SEO?

Your website is tracked and indexed by various search engines so that potential customers and visitors can find you. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of helping search engines understand your website and recommend your business to potential visitors. The best way to describe it is going to a library and finding your book front and centre in the correct section, so that visitors can easily find it.

2. What is an SEO assessment?

An SEO assessment is an audit of your website to establish how search-friendly your website is and how popular you are in the online community. It looks at the crawlability of your website – which is the ability of a seach engine to search through your text content and navigate easily to every page without encountering any dead ends or chained re-directs. It also looks at your meta components (the information you supply as a page heading and description for search engines), your website’s usability, as well as your actual website content and keywords.

3. What does a Netregistry SEO assessment involve?

With the Netregistry SEO assessment, we will help you build a keyword strategy and provide an indepth, on page assessment report, followed by a phone consultation with an online marketing expert to help you get the most out of SEO. However, an SEO assessment is only part of the puzzle – you still need to implement the changes we suggest in our report. Clients also need to keep in mind that it takes a week or two for the search engine spider to re-index every website on the internet, so changes aren’t immediate.

4. What’s the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

On-page SEO is the content of your website, including the titles, meta components and body content of your websites pages. Off-page SEO encompasses any external links that come back to your website, citations mentioning your contact details and social media citations. This is because Google doesn’t just compare you to your competitors, it also scans the entire internet for information about your business. A major ranking factor is how many other websites link back to you, because it means someone else is recommending your content and it must therefore be worth reading.

5. What else can I do to improve my SEO?

Original content goes a long way to improving your SEO, as does updating that content regularly to ensure it’s fresh and accurate. You might consider hiring a copywriter to assist with this. Another major component is crawlability, which ensures your website is indexed easily and regularly. By following SEO best practices you ensure the Googlebots come back to your site to scan for new content and keywords regularly.
